Not just strongly like, but capital L-O-V-E, LOVE! So when I dove into Lauren Oliver’s “Delirium,” about a dystopian world where love has been scientifically cured, I was already heartbroken that nobody could have a love for the trivial yet amazing things in life you just can’t live without. ![]() ![]() Personal response: I am a big fan of the Dear America series of historical fiction stories. Her world feels like it is falling apart until her father assures her things will get better. Much to her horror, her mother is arrested for picketing and taken to jail. Kat keeps a diary and journals the events along with her feelings. ![]() Her extended family (cousin, aunt, and uncle) appear with their own troubles to add to Kat’s life. Her sister leaves home (unannounced) for France to be an ambulance driver. Kat’s mother becomes very involved with the movement participating in the picket lines in front of the White House. The United States is involved in World War I and the women of the country are working towards getting the right to vote. They’re all so charming and quirky and full of heart, and I know I can expect to close each of her books with a big smile on my face. Who are your favorite authors and/or characters? Issue books certainly have their place, and I wanted to show that people of color can have their happily-ever-afters, too. I was inspired to write “When Dimple Met Rishi” because there’s still a dearth of young adult literature about teens of color in fun, lighthearted stories. What matters is that you are my friend.” And then they just keep playing and hanging out. Now, I didn’t really think that Tilly’s friend, Errol, would turn around and be horrible to Tilly, but it was absolutely gorgeous to see him just completely accept Tilly as she is. Tilly is a transgender teddy bear, and the way that this presented is so incredibly lovely. Not only is Introducing Teddy LGBTQIA+ kid lit, which is important in and of itself, but it’s trans kid lit. And, hopefully, people will give it the love it deserves so that publishers know how important it is to have LGBTQIA+ books in all genres. ![]() So to see Introducing Teddy being published makes me incredibly happy. I am an advocate for LGBTQIA+ lit in YA (as most of you probably know), but I also know that there is a need for LGBTQIA+ middle grade lit, and also kid lit. ![]() I also think that everyone should read it, so here I have a nifty list just for you, detailing all the reasons why Introducing Teddy should be on your TBR.
